The Lebanese composer and ud player Rabih Abou-Khalil brings together different musical worlds like no other – from the classical European tradition, which he came to know during his studies in Munich, to refined Arabic lyricism, which he has down to his fingertips. In his furious improvisations, the driving thrust of jazz and rock seem never far away. After one performance, the Gazet van Antwerpen noted that in his music the melding of cultures seemed ‘amazingly natural and dangerously exciting’. The presence of the Rabih Abou-Khalil Trio at the festival really is something special. Rabih’s appearances in the Netherlands are rare, and fans cherish every concert his trio gives. This year, we’re particularly lucky, as in addition to his performance at the Ud Festival, Rabih will participate in November Music, an international festival of contemporary music held in Den Bosch.
