Marcel Khalife

Het Concertgebouw | Amsterdam

October 10, 2018 20:15 - 22:35 Het Concertgebouw | Amsterdam

Lebanese ud player and composer Marcel Khalife (1950) stands on a singular summit in the Arab world. As an interpreter of Arabic songs, he has for decades been a source of inspiration to young and old. He has made over 20 albums and published six books. Khalife finds his inspiration in the rich heritage of Andalusian music, in the complex Eastern maqam tradition, and in Arabic literature. He manages to combine his influences in a way that creates a new musical-poetic idiom. His music is avant-garde, his voice is raw, and his presence on stage is pure and compelling. For this concert, Khalife has evolved a new musical composition and colour in which the refined sounds of the ud and song form a challenging combination.
