Two exceptional ensembles come together to present a joint programme especially tailored for the Ud Festival.

The Madar Ensemble, whose line-up includes Palestinian ud player Nizar Rohana and Dutch bassist Tony Overwater, perform with a trio comprising clarinettist Maarten Ornstein, violinist Jasser Haj Youssef and percussionist Ruven Ruppik. Lute player Mike Fentross is a special guest during the Ud Festival concerts.

With Renaissance lute specialist Fentross and ud specialist Rohana on stage together, a fascinating overview of this beautiful instrument unfolds. Arabic music, Renaissance and jazz merge in a unique new sound, making the collaborative spirit of Al- Andalus live on in the 21st century.

The programme includes work from the classical Arabic muwashshah and the Dutch Renaissance traditions, alongside contemporary compositions by Rohana, Ornstein and Overwater.

Born near Haifa city and now based in the Netherlands, Nizar Rohana is a scholar of Arabic music as well as a distinguished ud player and composer. His influences include ancient Arabic as well as classical Western composers, and he has immersed himself in contemporary work for the ud. He is known for combining virtuosity with fresh contemporary compositions, while maintaining the ud’s authenticity.
