Master ud player Yurdal Tokcan takes up the challenge of interweaving Turkish musical traditions with the jazzy sounds of Reinier Baas and his ensemble in a musical spectacular where Baas and Tokcan push each other to the limits.
A breathtakingly talented guitarist and gifted composer, Baas is renowned for his risk taking and barrier-busting adventures across genres. Tokcan is celebrated for his inimitable technique and refined musical style, laced with solo improvisations.
The concert explores where two people from very different backgrounds can meet in the musical landscape. As a fretless instrument, the ud offers easy flexibility in tuning and mood, daring Baas to translating these subtle, microtonal nuances to the guitar.
Reinier Baas has performed at major festivals and venues around the globe, from the Netherlands to New Zealand, and Italy to Japan, as composer, bandleader and master guitarist. He explores, energises and extends genres from chamber music and opera to improvised music and jazz.
Considered one of the world’s finest ud musicians, Yurdal Tokcan has toured extensively throughout Turkey and around Europe and the Middle East. His playing fuses established Turkish tradition with stylistic innovation, and his own compositions combine rich traditional melodies with polyphonic textures performed on classical Turkish instruments.
The Ud Festival has decided to adapt the programme with Reinier Baas and Yurdal Tokcan due to the current COVID-19 measures. The ud virtuoso from Istanbul is not able to travel to the Netherlands. Ahmed El Maai will stand in for Tokcan in a new programme developed together with Baas. El Maai is a multi-instrumentalist with a great love for the ud and qanun. His play is adventurous with unprecedented variations between Maghrebi and Eastern sounds.
We hope to welcome Yurdal Tokcan for the next edition of the festival. This year, he will present an exclusive Ud Festival concert from Istanbul, Turkey, through the online channels of the festival.
