Ud musician Younes Fakhar, from Tangier in Morocco, pays tribute to his mentor Saïd Chraïbi (1951-2016).
Fakhar has drawn inspiration from Chraïbi’s ingenious improvisational technique. In Taqasim (Arabic for ‘improvisations’), he takes us on a journey through the musical landscape that inspired Chraïbi.
Whereas most ud players work within parallel musical frameworks, in Chraïbi’s
work we see these frameworks intermesh in a single musical idiom – an idiom that combines colours from flamenco, Maghreb and sharqi styles into a unified whole.
Let yourself be carried away by this breathtaking journey, peppered with improvisations.
Virtuosos Yassir Bousselam (cello), Ahmed El Maai (qanun/ud), Abderrahim Semlali (violin) and Ruven Ruppik (percussion) join Fakhar on the quest.
